Care of the Aging Skin

As the body ages, the appearance and characteristics of the skin alter.

Aging is accelerated in those areas exposed to sunlight (ultraviolet radiation), a process known as “photo aging”. This is particularly apparent on the face, and occurs at an early age in fair skinned people who have spent much time outdoors.

Aging and sun damaged skin

The result of photo aging is lines and wrinkles, brown freckles called “lentigos”, yellowing of the skin, dilated capillaries (telangiectases), blackheads, and whiteheads (senile comedones), and a dry complexion. Inherited traits such as cherry angiomas and seborrheic keratosis (body barnacles) may also appear during later adulthood.

Actinic keratoses are tender, red, and flaky spots found most often on the face and backs of the hands. Actinic keratoses are usually removed by cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen). Skin should be regularly examined for these lesions requiring treatment.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. A slow growing, flesh colored lump may develop into a sore that will not heal. It is often located on the forehead or side of the nose. When on the trunk of the body it forms slowly as an enlarging red patch. These are most commonly removed by minor surgery.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma may grow rapidly, forming a tender, crusting lump. They are found on the exposed areas, especially ears, lips, hands, and lower legs. Minor surgery is the usual method of treatment.

Melanoma is the least common but most dangerous skin cancer. Melanoma can occur in young adults as well as the elderly. It takes on the form of a growing mole or freckle with an unusual appearance. If diagnosed at an early stage, it is usually treated with an easy surgery and considered cured.
